Alex Onofrei, MD

Dr. Onofrei grew up in southern Oregon before attending the University of Arizona where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and received his BA degree in Nutritional Science. He received his Medical Doctor degree from Marquette’s Medical College of Wisconsin in 1995 and subsequently completed his Family Medicine residency training with an emphasis on Sports Medicine at the Scottsdale Healthcare Family Medicine Residency program in Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Onofrei has been practicing Family Medicine and Sports Medicine in Mesa, Arizona since the completion of his formal education. 

Dr. Onofrei continues to practice a broad scope of Family Medicine; caring for patients from newborns to end of life. Having practiced for over 20 years in Mesa, he has a well-established primary care practice that continues to welcome new patients and family/friends of current patients.

Dr. Onofrei’s experience in primary care Sports Medicine at the elite athlete level has been significant and extensive. He has served as team/event physician for numerous organizations and events over the past 20 years including the Arizona Fall League with Major League Baseball, the ATP Tennis event in Scottsdale, the Senior PGA golf events in Scottsdale, and the Professional Bull Rider’s events in Scottsdale. Dr. Onofrei currently serves as the Head Team Physician for Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club and Red Mountain High School, as well as Associate Team Physician for Major League Baseball’s Arizona Fall League and the new Arizona Junior College football league. 

Being a former collegiate athlete and current competitive fisherman, Dr. Onofrei has developed a particular interest in caring for joint and muscle conditions in all types of athletes. He has firsthand knowledge of conditions and injuries that affect amateur and professional athletes, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts, firefighters and policemen, martial arts experts, the weekend warrior, and the elder athlete. Dr. Onofrei is committed to effectively and thoroughly evaluating patients to formulate treatment strategies that will help patients to remain active in the activities they love. 

Makayla Babish, PA-C

Makayla was raised in western Nebraska where she went to undergrad at Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Kearney where she graduated with a BA degree of Psychology and Health and Human Sciences. She then went to physician assistant school at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated in May of 2021 earning her title of PA-C. Since becoming a PA, she has discovered a passion for family and sports medicine, so AZ Family Medicine and Sports Medicine has been a fantastic transition from school to career. She is very excited to expand her knowledge and give her patients the best possible care.
